GIVE is proud to be part of the 2011 Philadelphia Orchard Project Music Festival on July 16th. The evening will include five great bands: Faux Slang, Eric Carbonara + Jesse Sparhawk, Zillions + Blood Like Mine, The Old Fashioneds, and Pile of Girls, delicious food, beer, and of course GIVE drinks!
We encourage all our Philly friends to check out this fun urban farm fundraiser and to support such a worthwhile organization! In 2010 alone, the Philadelphia Orchard Project was able to plant five new orchards, expand twelve existing ones, and organize a number of workshops including a Fruit Tree Tenders session with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
To learn more about the Philadelphia Orchard Project or to buy tickets to the Festival check out their website at: http://www.phillyorchards.org/

Now that summertime is finally upon us, it is super easy to incorporate more environmentally friendly exercise into your daily life. Not to mention, you’ll get a great boost of Vitamin D from being outside at the same time!

1. Walk or bike to work
For those of you who live too far to walk or bike, consider getting off the metro or bus a few stops early and walking the rest of the way. A ten minute walk on your way in means you will walk ten minutes on your way out which equals twenty minutes of exercise for the day! Win-win!
2. Power walk to and from your lunch break
A brisk five-minute walk to and from your favorite sandwich shop will be the same as ten minutes of exercise. Not to mention, stepping out of the office for a little sunshine is sure way to brighten anyone’s day!
3. Take the stairs
On rainy days when you can’t go for a walk outside, opt to take the stairs instead of the elevator. After a few flights, we guarantee your heart will be pumping!
4. Take advantage of the outdoors on your days off
Lace up your shoes and go for a run, hop on your bike, or dive into your local pool for a quick splash. All these activities are lots of fun, and can be done with all your friends!
And of course, don’t forget to stay hydrated with your GIVE Water!

GIVE donated 30 cases of bottled water to The Call to Serve’s recent mission to New Orleans to Volunteer with Operation Helping Hands. The Call to Serve is a non-profit organization that offers a variety of local and national service trips for young adults. Check out www.thecalltoserve.org. Even six years after Hurricane Katrina, there is still work to be done, and we are happy we could help!
Look at this awesome picture they sent us from the runway:

Drink GIVE had the opportunity to take part it ReFuel Pittsburgh’s event at Whole Foods twice! Both events were a huge success!
ReFuel Pittsburgh, one of local charities we support, collects used cooking oil at locations around the city and then turns it into fuel. They had a great oil collection display/demonstration, raffles, and were able to answer questions about home collection.
GIVE had the opportunity to talk to shoppers and offer samples of our products. Check out these photos from the two events below:

Father’s Day is right around the corner. Rather than buying Dad a gas grill or electric power tools, consider these environmentally friendly gifts that he is bound to love!

Free Coupons –
This was my Dad’s personal favorite. Two weeks from now when Dad wants to be a couch potato for the day, he can pull out his “mow the lawn” coupon, and watch you get right to work! Some of my Dad’s other favorite coupons include “Free Backrub,” “Free Car Wash,” and “My Pick on TV.”
Homemade Anything –
Feeling crafty? Dads love being able to boast that “yes, this tie was sewn by my daughter!” Ties are super easy to construct, and fabric is much cheaper than buying an actual tie. Other ideas – hand decorated picture frames, photo collages, paint old cans or jars to use as a pencil holder or pot for a plant, or a smooth rock painted as a paperweight. Be creative!
Solar Products –
Today you can find just about anything that is solar. From hat fans to speakers to bike lights, many products that use batteries are available in a solar form. Check out solar backpacks and laptop cases from http://www.voltaicsystems.com/
Power Monitor –
Does your Dad love to harass you about unplugging electronics and turning off the lights? With a power monitor he can remind you exactly how much energy you are wasting by leaving those gadgets plugged it!
Organic Cotton or Bamboo Products -
Organic Cotton Shirts are easy to find. Bamboo sheets are also environmentally friendly and super soft, as well as bamboo robes. For a Dad who loves the kitchen, check out bamboo cutting boards.
The Dad who loves to eat and drink –
Consider organic wine such as Ceago Sauvignon Blanc, a six pack of artisan beer, or don an apron and whip up a batch of his favorite chunky cookies. Check out Whole Foods or a local farmers market for locally grown organic fresh food. Consider assembling a fresh food basket with all his favorite products!
And sometimes the best “give” of all –
Rather than giving a physical gift, spend the day with Dad doing a favorite or special activity. Go for a hike or pack a picnic and spend the day at a park. This cuts back on the boxes of tube socks that surface each June as Father’s Day gifts, plus, the memories from the day will last forever!
*Also be creative with wrapping! Wrap your gifts in old newspapers, magazines, or even outdated maps! Not only does this look cool, but you’ll be recycling too!

It’s that time of year to open the windows and let the smell of fresh cut grass infiltrate your formerly closed, stuffed-up winter home. And of course, what comes along with that but some spring-cleaning! Here are a few tips to make sure your spring-cleaning stays as green as possible!

1. Use environmentally friendly cleaning products
Brands like Seventh Generation work just as well as other cleaning products, and they don’t contain harmful chemicals that aren’t earth friendly
Even better? Make your own cleaners! White vinegar in a spray bottle is a natural deodorizer, and the smell disappears when dry. Other recipes can be easily found online.
2. Set up a Solar Dryer!
Hanging a clothesline outside is as easy as stringing up a rope, will help cut energy costs, and extend the life of your clothes! Plus, sunshine is a natural deodorizer. Sounds like a win-win to me!
3. Think REUSE
When cleaning out your wardrobe, consider donating old clothes to a charity like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Or have a garage sale and pocket the extra bucks!
4. Cut back on paper!
Instead of buying paper towels, consider cutting up an old cloth, such as frayed towels or torn t-shirts. Most bills can now be paid online too, so that’s an additional way to help save some trees!
5. Stop using air fresheners
Instead, cut some fresh flowers or open the windows on a sunny day. There are much healthier ways
Have another great tip? We want to know!

As the first week of December comes to a close, the winter temperatures have finally settled in. For those in the northern regions, freezing temps mean that its time to put on that extra layer of clothing and turn the themostat from A/C to heat.
Here are a few tips to keep warm this winter without breaking the bank:
1. Wear a hat

Most of the heat in our body is lost through our head. When going outside, put on a hat to trap the heat and look stylish.
2. Use curtains
Windows create opportunities for drafts of cold air to come in. Purchase a set of heavy curtains for the windows to eliminate outside cold.
3. Cook

Using the stove will warm up the kitchen and other areas of you house, not to mention you’ll warm up from the movement. So stay inside and have a delicious home cooked meal.
This is an affordable way to heat a room and are ideal if you only use certain areas of your home.
5. Find a snuggle buddy

Cuddling up with your pet or a special someone is a great way to warm up!

This week is National Recycling Week and instead of rehashing the basic rules of recycling, here is an innovative program to simplify recycling and give products a place to be reused.
TerraCycle takes product that are usually non-recyclable, such as cookie wrappers, chip bags and food storage containers and “upcycles” them to make products which are sold in stores. Capri Sun tote bags and bicycle chain paper frames are just some of the items that can be found at chains like WalMart and Home Depot.

The process to sign up is simple, where you can either join an existing “team” or create your own. Teams can have any number of people on them, and each team is paid anywhere from 2 to 25 cents per product. Those earnings then go to a charity designated by the team.
When your team is ready for a recycling pick up, TerraCycle will give you a prepaid label to send in your goods. One of the terms of this program is that there are minimum amounts of products you must have to send in. For example, there must be at least 500 fruit drink pouches in a shipment.
This sounds like a great program to use in the office or apartment building. Will you join TerraCycle? What do you do to reduce environmental waste?
